MY FIRST DANCE LESSON

By Carol Chinn

Who talked me into this? I thought
As I waited to go on the floor.
I'll do this one lesson, but not any more!

"Let's start with the Foxtrot."
My teacher said kindly - a nice smile on his face.
And my heart is beating like I'd been in a race.

We circled the dance floor completely once.
I stumbled a little and felt like a dunce.
What am I doing? I looked at my feet.
"Keep looking up," he said as our eyes meet.

He leads me gently and the music is nice.
I follow his lead and only miss twice.
He grinned and said, "You're doing O.K.
And you'll get better -- just do as I say."

We glided and swayed and kept getting faster.
And I made a promise that this I would master.
Maybe I didn't do so bad, had anyone looked,
But this I knew: I was completely hooked.

I couldn't believe it, but it was true --
I couldn't wait for Lesson Two.
